May Herald article, including trip to help Mississippi Katrina victims
"Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me." Matt 25:40
The Mission Committee in 2008 will encourage a "hands-on" mission approach. While giving funds for programs helping those in pain, in poverty, and in hard places in life is important and will continue, programs that have volunteers working directly with people will develop relationships. These relationships will give the NWHUMC community the opportunity to share the love of God with others. For any additional information of the following missions, contact Debbie Johnson, Mission Chair, 327-7718
The makeover at Asbury UMC will continue as volunteers work on various projects most Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tasks are related to the repair and upgrade of the Open Door Preschool, including an ambitious new handicap accessibility ramp. Please contact Charley Gallia, 331-9547
NWHUMC Food Pantry serves the local community by giving food to those who come to us for help. We stock nonperishable canned and boxed food as well as baby formula and food, diapers, and hygiene products. Contact the church office.
The Mission Committee will continue to support projects to minister to the needs of children in orphanages and to support programs that help women and children at risk for prostitution. Contact: Claudia Biel 467-0081.
Funds are available for those in our community facing financial difficulties. Contact the Church office.
Church members volunteer to provide rides to appointments and other necessary local activities for people 60 and older who are no longer able to drive but still live independently. Contact Teri Shapiro, 828-6724.
Teams of adults will travel to the Gulf Coast of Mississippi in April to continue the repairs on homes of victims Hurricane Katrina. Basic construction skills, a willingness to learn new skills, or the ability to listen (Stephen Ministers in particular) are all that are needed to be a part of this team. A trip to border Mexico and the Valley is anticipated for the fall.
NWHUMC provides food for over 200 of Austin's Homeless through Foundation for the Homeless every 2nd Thursday of the month. Volunteers meet at First UMC Family Life Center (13th and Lavaca) from 5:00-7:00 a.m. to prepare, serve and clean-up. Contact Matt Mitchell.
The Mission Committee is exploring ways to be in ministry with Good News UMC in Vologda, Russia, as a part of the Russia Initiative of the Southwest Texas Conference of UMC.
This involves support of the work of Good News UMC with children through camps, music and Sunday School and programs in orphanages through the Vologda Peace Foundation.
Good food at great prices is available to all in our congregation and community regardless of denomination and income. Food may be purchased and donated. For more information on the month's menu and the ordering and pickup dates, check nwfeedingtheflock.com or contact Krista Payne at 512-873-0609.
