Scouting at Northwest Hills

Boy Scouts

BOY SCOUTS:

There are many groups that use our facilities during the week, but none have been more faithful and active than the Boy Scouts of Troop 3 and Pack 2. They are a proud member of the Youth Ministry of Northwest Hills United Methodist Church — our sponsoring organization. Troop 3 meets every Monday night 7:00—8:30 p.m. in the Youth Center on Hart Lane directly across from Murchison Middle School. Troop 3 was founded in Austin at the University of Texas in 1915 by Judge Harris Gardner at the request of several boys. In 1972, Jack Eddins was asked to be Scoutmaster and moved Troop 3 to Northwest Hills UMC.

Harold Baker

Troop 3 has been continuously chartered since 1915, thanks to a dedicated group of men willing to lead young men. Judge Harris Gardner, founding Scoutmaster, served 1915—1918; Jack Eddins served 1972—1991; and David W. Stroud is the current Scoutmaster. Troop 3 remains very active for a nonagenarian (92 years and counting) and offers an outstanding youth program. Monthly campouts punctuated by high adventure summer outings and long-term summer Scout camps give boys a chance to experience the outdoors and challenge themselves. These have included backpacking in the Grand Canyon, Arkansas' Ozark Highlands Trail, and camping in Colorado's Rocky Mountains. Harold Baker, Charter Organization Representative, 401-0933.
